How to Unlock Cooking in Pokémon Pokopia

Full walkthrough for unlocking the cooking system in Pokémon Pokopia by rescuing Chef Dente in Rocky Ridges.

Chef Dente stands with cooking ingredients and prepared dishes laid out around the kitchen interface in Pokémon Pokopia.

Cooking isn't an early-game feature in Pokémon Pokopia. It unlocks midway through the main story, in Rocky Ridges, after you rescue Chef Dente — a Greedent trapped inside a chained barrel. This guide walks you through every step.

Prerequisites

Before you can even reach Chef Dente, you need to:

  1. Progress through Withered Wasteland (the second story region) and complete the main request "Yawn Up a Storm."
  2. Open the Area Gate to Rocky Ridges. It's at the far end of the cave where Onix was trapped, in the northwest of Withered Wasteland.
  3. Learn Strength from Machoke in Rocky Ridges and use it to move the PC blocking the Pokémon Center entrance. If you need to check which Pokémon help with utility tasks, the full Pokémon list is a good starting point. Professor Tangrowth will then hear a voice coming from the kitchen area to the left of the Pokémon Center — that's Chef Dente.

How to Free Chef Dente

Chef Dente is locked inside a barrel hanging from a chain. Plain Cut won't break it — you need to power up your Cut move by eating Simple Bread, and to bake bread you first need to build several cooking stations. For the finished dish list, see the Cooking Recipes page. Do the following steps in order:

  1. Help Dartrix and unlock the Cutting Board recipe, then craft a Cutting Board at a Workbench (2 Lumber). This is your first cooking station — salads.
  2. Make and eat a Simple Salad on the Cutting Board (2 Leaves). Eating it powers up Leafage, which you'll use to grow the tall grass Torkoal needs to reach the Pokémon Center.
  3. Guide Torkoal from the hot spring back to the Pokémon Center. Talk to it there to learn the Bread Oven recipe.
  4. Craft a Bread Oven at a Workbench: 2 Stone, 2 Small Log, 4 Volcanic Ash.
  5. Get Wheat. Head to the waterfall near the garden area, use Rock Smash on the dripping rocks so water flows into the garden, then harvest the Wheat that sprouts.
  6. Bake Simple Bread (3 Wheat) at the Bread Oven — ask Torkoal or Scorbunny (any Burn-specialty Pokémon) to light it first.
  7. Eat the Simple Bread to power up Cut, then use Cut on the chain holding Chef Dente's barrel.

Chef Dente drops out and officially teaches you to cook. The cooking system is now fully unlocked.

The Four Cooking Stations

Once Chef Dente is free, the cooking system is unlocked. As you continue progressing, you can access four cooking stations in total. Each one handles one food category and powers up a different move when eaten:

Station Category Base Ingredient Move Powered Up
Cutting Board Salads Leaf Leafage
Bread Oven Bread Wheat Cut
Cooking Pot (on Stove) Soups Fresh Water Water Gun
Frying Pan (on Stove) Hamburger Steaks Bean Rock Smash

Bread Oven, Cooking Pot and Frying Pan all need a fire, so keep a Burn-specialty Pokémon (Torkoal, Scorbunny's line, Charmander's line, etc.) nearby to light them. You can compare options on the Specialties page.

What Cooking Does for You

  • Fully restores the PP of the move tied to that dish's category.
  • Temporarily powers up that move — e.g. Simple Bread lets Cut slice through chains and extends its range, Hamburger Steak lets Rock Smash break gold/iron ore rocks, Simple Salad makes Leafage grow 4 patches of tall grass at once, Simple Soup extends Water Gun's range.
  • Can be gifted to Pokémon to raise their comfort level. Each Pokémon has its own flavor preferences.

There are 24 recipes in total (6 per category). Browse them all on the Cooking Recipes page.

Next Step: Chef's Kitchen Habitat

Chef Dente doesn't require a habitat to stick around, but building the Chef's Kitchen habitat is the best way to make it feel at home and unlocks related content. If you want to compare it with other builds, check the Habitats page. You can also complete Chef Dente's follow-up request "Time to Party!" later on to unlock its exclusive Party specialty for town-wide feasts. If you're still setting up your island overall, the Beginner Tips guide is a useful companion read.
